Association between Thyroid and Breast Disease in Korean Menopausal Women

Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives: To investigate the relationship between thyroid disease and breast disease in menopausal women.
Methods: 4,856 menopausal women were investigated retrospectively from September 2008 to October 2009 in eight
university hospital.
Results: Prevalence of thyroid disease and breast disease in menopausal women were 13.8% and 10.8%, respectively.
Risk of benign breast disease was lower in thyroid disease than normal menopausal women. In the detailed analysis
of women with thyroid disease, risk of benign breast disease was higher in hyperthyroidism and lower in thyroid
nodule. Risk of breast cancer was higher in hypothyroidism. Parenchymal patterns in mammography were better in
women with thyroid disease than normal menopausal women. FSH and estradiol were lower in women with thyroid
disease. Level of TSH and value of BIRADS in mammography showed positive correlation (r=0.051, P=0.002, age
adjusted). In contrast, Level of TSH and value of parenchymal patterns in mammography showed negative correlation
(r=-0.043, P=0.01, age adjusted).
Conclusion: Risk of benign breast disease was higher in menopausal women with hyperthyroidism and lower with
thyroid nodule. Risk of breast cancer was higher in menopausal women with hypothyroidism.
